Krone variable-chamber round balers: technological updates

Krone has expanded its range of Krone variable chamber round balers with the new CombiPack Hdp Cv 165 Xc.

Equipped with a single-belt chamber and a 41-knife rotor, the machine integrates a bale wrapper, allowing forage harvesting and plastic film wrapping to be completed in a single operation

Some jobs are best left to the professionals. That applies in everyday life as much as it does in agriculture. Looking after a small family vegetable garden is one thing; extracting maximum profitability from a large-scale farming or agricultural contracting business is quite another. In such cases, thinking big is essential—not only in terms of strategy but also when it comes to machinery and field operations.

Designed precisely with these requirements in mind, the new Krone CombiPack HDP CV 165 XC combines a high-performance professional round baler with an integrated wrapper, enabling forage harvesting and bale wrapping to be completed in a single pass. Suitable for both silage crops and dry materials such as straw, the new machine from the Spelle-based manufacturer is designed to deliver maximum bale density while significantly increasing hourly productivity.

Its advanced cutting system produces a more uniform crop flow before the material enters the single-belt variable chamber, where bales with diameters ranging from 100 to 165 cm are formed. Operational efficiency has been increased by up to 30% compared with structurally similar previous-generation models, thanks in part to the patented chain-free PowerDrive transmission. Operating exclusively through gears, this system minimizes downtime while significantly reducing maintenance requirements.

As a result, the CombiPack HDP CV 165 XC can consistently operate at maximum capacity, supported by the proven EasyFlow pick-up. Hydraulically driven and featuring a working width of 2.23 metres, the pick-up is equipped with five rows of tines that ensure smooth, continuous crop intake even in heavy windrows.

Once collected, the crop is fed to the XCut chopping rotor, fitted with 41 individually protected knives. Besides simplifying maintenance, this configuration enables chop lengths as short as 27 mm—among the shortest currently available on the market. Operators can easily adjust the chop length by preselecting the number of active knives according to field conditions, choosing among five configurations: 0, 5, 20, 21 or all 41 knives.

After chopping, the crop enters the baling chamber, where it is progressively compressed by a triple-drive system that maintains uniform bale rotation throughout the process. The machine also allows operators to produce soft-core bales when required, with core density adjustable directly from the tractor cab through the simplified drive system, which uses a single chain to power the rollers.

Six Seconds Are Enough

Once bale formation is complete, the CombiPack Hdp Cv 165 Xc automatically transfers the bale to the integrated wrapping unit, which is mounted in place of the conventional rear tailgate by means of a single oscillating arm. The wrapping table tilts forward automatically to facilitate bale transfer, while a dedicated elevator safely positions the bale onto the wrapping platform.

The entire transfer process takes just six seconds, after which the wrapper begins applying the plastic film at speeds of up to 40 revolutions per minute. When the film rolls need replacing, they can be conveniently removed from the dispenser, which is hydraulically lowered to an ergonomically comfortable working height while the side guards open automatically, making the operation both quick and safe.
