John Deere acquires aerial imaging solutions provider Sentera

With the acquisition of Sentera, John Deere expands its range of solutions aimed at improving the profitability, efficiency and sustainability of agricultural businesses

John Deere Sentera

John Deere announces the acquisition of Sentera, a leading provider of remote imaging solutions for agriculture based in St. Paul, Minnesota. This acquisition will expand the capabilities of John Deere’s existing technology offerings, providing farmers and ag service providers with a more comprehensive set of tools to generate and use data to support decisions that improve the profitability, efficiency and sustainability of their farms.

A step closer to innovation

Sentera’s industry-leading cameras are compatible with most major drone platforms, enabling farmers and crop scouts to quickly and efficiently capture high-resolution data at scale. Their capabilities and FieldAgent software tools help farmers and agronomists assess individual plant health, identify stressors and take action. Additionally, SMARTSCRIPT™ Weeds, a customized herbicide recipe, can be applied by sprayers with individual nozzle control.

Drones equipped with Sentera technology fly over fields at high speeds and generate high-resolution images. These images are processed with Sentera’s FieldAgent application to identify the exact location of specific weeds and generate a map of them. This map then creates a targeted prescription for how much product a farmer should load into their sprayer, helping to minimize waste. Once generated, the prescription can be sent wirelessly to compatible equipment through the John Deere Operations Center.

Utility in Agriculture

Weed maps are just one example of the actionable data generated by Sentera scouting technology. The same process can be used in a field to assess crop uniformity, disease rates and pests. The Sentera integration also supports John Deere’s approach to making it easier for farmers to implement the technology, bringing new precision capabilities to a wide range of customers and integrating the most advanced precision ag technologies, including See & Spray™.

Sentera will continue to supply cameras directly to drone manufacturers for integration into their products, as well as selling directly to farmers, agronomists, agricultural retailers and other users. The John Deere Operations Center will continue to be open to integration with other drone video providers, giving customers and their trusted advisors a wide range of options to choose the right solutions for their needs.
