The new Claas Nexos 2 Cmatic specialist tractors launched last November have given rise to a technologically advanced product line that complements the range of traditional specialist tractors, which themselves underwent a complete renewal at the end of 2024
Subjected to the stringent quality control protocols applied by Claas in Germany, yet built in Italy using top-tier Italian core components, the “Nexos 2” specialist tractors are the result of a synergy that perfectly combines the expertise of Italian designers with the rigor and rationality that characterize German industry. The outcome is a family of machines offering outstanding reliability and safety.
This is the same range that Claas completely revamped in 2024 and has now decided to expand through the development of new models featuring continuously variable “Cmatic” transmissions instead of conventional mechanical and hydraulic systems.
Branded “Nexos 2 Cmatic”, the new machines share the same engine configurations as the existing models and are therefore available in four versions delivering rated outputs of 85, 95, 105 and 120 horsepower. Power is provided by FPT “F36” engines approved for the use of hydrotreated vegetable fuels and compliant with Stage V emissions standards without relying on exhaust gas recirculation systems.
Each model is also available in four different widths, ranging from approximately one meter to one and a half meters, giving rise to the “S”, “M”, “L” and “X” versions. The first is specifically designed for narrow vineyards, the two intermediate versions are intended for wider-row crops and orchards, while the fourth, especially when equipped with the most powerful engine, becomes a true all-rounder, equally suited to field operations such as haymaking, road transport with trailers, or daily maintenance and handling tasks around the farm.
Regardless of the application, operators can rely on one of the most advanced continuously variable transmissions currently available. Developed through collaboration between Claas engineers and specialists from the Carraro Group, the transmission consists of a hydrostatic pump-and-motor module integrated within a three-range mechanical layout, itself supported by an electro-hydraulically controlled high/low reduction unit.
Once either field or road mode has been selected, an electronic control unit manages both the transmission ranges and the hydrostatic system, continuously optimizing torque delivery while minimizing energy losses according to the engine loads imposed by the operator.
The result is the lowest possible fuel consumption combined with exceptional driving smoothness, allowing the tractor to accelerate from standstill to 40 km/h at an engine speed of just 1,530 rpm, without requiring the operator to use any controls other than the “Cmotion” driving joystick mounted on the multifunction armrest.
The system also facilitates starts from standstill, even when towing trailers or operating on slopes, by automatically adjusting transmission ratios. Direction changes can be performed not only through the “Cmotion” joystick but also via the traditional steering-column-mounted “ReverShift” lever or a second joystick located to the right of the Cmotion control, known as “ElectroPilot”.
The latter is also responsible for managing the onboard hydraulic system, a load-sensing unit capable of delivering up to 110 liters of oil per minute. It controls all front couplers, up to eight, rear couplers, up to ten, and up to four double-acting spool valves, including dual diverter valves. For mid-mounted implements, a “Power Beyond” connection with flat-face quick couplers is available as an option.
The hydraulic system also controls engagement and disengagement of the PTOs, including the standard rear PTO with four operating speeds, the optional “ProActiv” suspended front axle, which can be controlled either automatically or manually, and the steering assistance system incorporating “Dynamic Steering”, which reduces the number of steering wheel turns required to move the wheels from lock to lock during maneuvering.
In these situations, operators can also take advantage of automated implement management during headland turns through the “CSM” system, which naturally also controls the front and rear hitch systems, each capable of lifting more than 2.9 tonnes.
Compact outside, comfortable inside
All new Claas “Nexos 2 Cmatic” specialist tractors are equipped with four-post cabs designed to maximize space and comfort despite the tractors’ compact overall width. Full-opening doors and flat floors contribute significantly, but particular emphasis has been placed on the premium air-suspended driver’s seats, featuring a system specifically designed to dampen the vibration frequencies most disturbing to the human body.
The cabs are both air-conditioned and heated, providing excellent visibility across the entire horizon. They can also be equipped with a rear-view camera to make maneuvering easier and safer, while up to ten high-output LED work lights can be installed for operators who frequently work in low-light conditions or at night.
The cabs are available with either Category 2 or Category 4 operator protection systems. All versions are ISOBUS-ready, enabling seamless communication with compatible implements. They are also pre-arranged for the installation of the “Cebis” terminal, which, when fitted, provides access to the full range of digital services and connectivity solutions developed by Claas.
Cab or platform, always Nexos 2
The Claas “Nexos 2” family was introduced in 2024 and includes both platform versions, known as “Trend”, and cab-equipped models, known as “Comfort”.
The latter are available in four working widths, ranging from just one meter for the “S” models up to 170 cm for the “XL” versions. Between these extremes are the 124 cm-wide “M” models and the 144 cm-wide “L” versions. The platform range also includes narrow-base variants measuring 132 cm and 155 cm in width, designated “Md” and “Ld”.
Four power ratings are available, starting with the 85 hp “220” model and extending to the flagship “260” version delivering 120 hp. Intermediate outputs of 92 hp and 103 hp are offered by the “230” and “240” models respectively.
Powered by the same FPT engines used in the new “Nexos 2 Cmatic” tractors, the platform models are available with six different transmission options. The entry-level version features a three-range, four-speed gearbox providing 12 forward and 12 reverse speeds. This transmission can be enhanced with a creeper gearbox and mechanical shuttle, increasing the number of gears to 24 forward and 24 reverse, or with a two-stage “TwinShift” powershift combined with an electro-hydraulic “ReverShift” shuttle. In this configuration, the transmission offers 24 forward and 12 reverse speeds.
Cab-equipped models, on the other hand, are based on a three-range, five-speed transmission providing 15 forward and 15 reverse gears in standard configuration. Depending on specification, this can become either a 30+30 transmission through the addition of a creeper gearbox and mechanical shuttle, or a 30+15 transmission when equipped with the two-stage “TwinShift” powershift and electro-hydraulic “ReverShift” shuttle.
The result is an exceptionally broad and versatile product offering, enabling every customer to configure a machine precisely suited to specific operational requirements.
Like the CVT models, traditional “Comfort” cab versions can also be equipped with the “ProActiv” suspended front axle. Electronically controlled through electro-hydraulic systems, the suspension operates via two cylinders positioned between the chassis and axle at an outward angle, ensuring optimal weight distribution on the front axle and maximum stability whenever significant static or dynamic loads are involved.
Also noteworthy are the dual-pump hydraulic systems capable of delivering up to 85 liters of oil per minute. When required, a third pump can be added, increasing total hydraulic flow to 111 liters per minute.
