As previously noted, 90 percent of startups fail within their first five years of operation—a fact that should prompt governments to reconsider the incentives granted to such organizations and instead redirect those funds toward well-established, structurally sound companies.

The latest confirmation of this trend is the experience of Monarch Tractor, a California-based startup founded in 2018 to build fully electric, autonomous tractors equipped with advanced sensors and data-gathering platforms—all products designed for specialized crops.

Although the company raised approximately $251 million, it never achieved a sustainable production scale; consequently, last January, it restructured itself into an innovative service provider—a role that Caterpillar has now decided to claim exclusively by acquiring the California firm outright.

In doing so, Caterpillar has gained access to proven expertise in autonomous driving, electrification, and data management, as well as industry-specific patents and software, all at a cost significantly lower than the investment required to develop these same products in-house.
