McCormick X7 Swb: tractors in fashion

At Agritechnica 2025, several manufacturers showcased new machines characterized by high engine power combined with short wheelbases.

These tractors are therefore able to combine strong performance with excellent maneuverability. Among the first brands to introduce this type of machine was McCormick, which had already launched its McCormick X7 Swb models back in 2021

Technical literature in the sector explains that a tractor’s towing capacity and maneuverability are strongly influenced—often in opposite ways—by its wheelbase, the distance between the centers of the rear and front wheels. Generally speaking, the longer the wheelbase, the greater the towing capacity, but at the expense of maneuverability, which instead improves as the wheelbase decreases.

For this reason, when designing new machines, tractor manufacturers must define wheelbases aligned with the mission profiles each model is intended to fulfill. Over time—particularly since the end of the first decade of the century—this need has led high-power tractors to diversify their chassis layouts in order to favor either traction capacity or maneuverability.

Alongside traditional machines, “SWB” (Short Wheelbase) versions therefore appeared—tractors capable of adapting to a wide range of operational requirements and meeting the needs of farming businesses engaged in multiple, diversified activities. This is especially true for mixed farming operations that must combine open-field work and forage applications with road transport and handling tasks in livestock environments.

In practice, the high-power tractor segment has evolved into two mechanically similar types of machines but with different operational profiles: traditional tractors oriented toward heavy field work, and SWB versions designed as highly versatile machines.

Among the first manufacturers to offer customers the possibility of choosing the same tractor model with two different wheelbases was McCormick, which in 2021—during EIMA International—launched the SWB versions of its “X7” series, together with the debut of the top-of-the-range “Clever Cab” cabins.

Available with both four- and six-cylinder engines and with either robotic or continuously variable transmissions, the McCormick “X7 SWB” tractors are now offered in six different models. All feature a shorter wheelbase compared with the more structured standard “X7.6” versions—2,760 millimeters for the six-cylinder models and 2,651 millimeters for the four-cylinder versions, compared with the 2,820 millimeters of the standard X7.6.

This configuration enhances maneuverability without significantly compromising field traction or road performance.

The result is a range of tractors that are more versatile than standard models, capable of handling a wide variety of tasks and thereby helping reduce overall farm investment in machinery fleets. All this without forcing operators to compromise on performance or technical content.

Performance and reliability are ensured by engines supplied by FPT Industrial. Four-cylinder models use N45 units, while six-cylinder versions adopt the N67 series, with respective displacements of 4.5 liters and 6.7 liters. Power outputs start at 165 horsepower for the “X7.417” and “X7.617” models and rise to 175 horsepower for the “X7.418” and “X7.618” versions.

All engines comply with Stage V emissions standards through SCR-only systems, meaning no exhaust gas recirculation is required. They are equipped with electronically controlled common-rail fuel injection, four valves per cylinder, and turbocharging supported by intercooler systems.

As mentioned earlier, the integration between engine and transmission differs depending on the model. The “X7.417” and “X7.617” versions are equipped with a six-stage powershift transmission called “PS-Drive”, operating on a five-speed robotic gearbox that provides 30 forward and 15 reverse gears.

The “X7.418” and “X7.618” models, on the other hand, can optionally be equipped with “VT-Drive” continuously variable transmissions, four-stage CVT units derived from ZF Friedrichshafen technology.

This option greatly simplifies machine operation, especially during light field work and road transport, and enables more flexible working strategies by decoupling travel speed from engine load and rpm.

Another key strength of the McCormick “X7 SWB” tractors lies in their hydraulic options, designed specifically to enhance versatility. All tractors are equipped with load-sensing hydraulic systems delivering 52 liters per minute for onboard services and 123 liters per minute for working hydraulics.

Combined with a flow divider, this system can power up to eight remote valves, the four-speed PTO (540 and 1,000 rpm in both standard and eco modes), and a rear hitch with a maximum lifting capacity of 9,300 kilograms. An optional front linkage with a lifting capacity of 3,500 kilograms is also available.

For particularly demanding implements requiring high oil flow, the hydraulic system’s maximum capacity can be increased to 160 liters per minute.

Comfort Zone

The McCormick “X7 SWB” tractors are equipped as standard with “Clever Cab” cabins featuring an internal volume of 2.5 cubic meters, achieved thanks to a roof height eight centimeters higher than typical category standards.

As is traditional for machines produced by Argo Tractors, the cab structure uses a four-pillar design that minimizes blind spots around the horizon and ensures excellent visibility. Visibility can be further improved through optional rear-view cameras connected to onboard monitors and, for frequent night work, through a lighting package of twenty high-power LED lights.

The cab is isolated from the chassis through automatic electro-hydraulic suspension systems, while the operator sits on air-suspended seats. Climate control is managed through automatic programmable air-conditioning systems.

Automotive-derived athermic glass ensures low internal noise levels—just 68 decibels—and provides Class 2 protection against the infiltration of gaseous, solid, or liquid pollutants.

Working comfort is further enhanced by interior trims made with the same plastics used in the automotive sector, the possibility of electrically adjusting the console position, and the standard “EasyPilot” joystick, which allows the operator to control the main tractor functions with one hand.

All machine parameters are managed through the “DSM” (Data Screen Manager) system, a 12-inch touchscreen monitor that enables ISOBUS communication with implements, interfaces with an optional Topcon guidance terminal for assisted steering, and supports all digital solutions offered by McCormick—including the “McCormick Farm” application, which allows simple and immediate management of the entire farming operation.
