Tractor market, ten years of ups and downs

There have been many economic and geopolitical events shaping the last decade.

All of them have had a direct or indirect impact on the agricultural sector and, in particular, on tractor registrations, which fluctuated between a low of 15,379 units and a high of 24,361

From Covid to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, passing through the so-called “Brexit”, the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, the Arab-Israeli conflicts and the tensions between China and the United States. The latter was governed from 2017 to 2021 and again from 2025 to today by a Republican President who has not exactly stood out for diplomatic skills.

It can certainly not be said that the decade between 2016 and 2025 lacked unexpected events that heavily influenced the world’s economic and geopolitical developments, also affecting — directly or indirectly — the national agricultural sector and, in particular, its level of mechanisation.

Evidence of this can be found in the fluctuating trend of tractor registrations, which started in 2016 with a volume of 18,336 units, rose the following year to 22,696 units, and then returned to fluctuating around 18,000 units until 2021, when the pandemic pushed the Government to introduce such a massive amount of aid that registrations soared beyond 24,000 units.

It was a golden year for almost all brands, but it also marked the beginning of a slow and steady decline that culminated in 2024 with a dramatic collapse characterised by just 15,379 registrations — the lowest level reached in the last fifty years according to FederUnacoma data.

It should be noted that industry insiders had expected the downward trend as a consequence of the excessive incentives granted to companies in 2021, but few had anticipated its magnitude. Nor had anyone foreseen, starting from 2023, the invasion of Asian compact tractors, clearly highlighted in the table published on this page by the sharp rise in the “Others” category.

This trend particularly affected domestic manufacturers whose registration volumes were more closely linked to low-horsepower compact tractors. It must also be said, however, that, as shown in the table, the fluctuations in registrations affected the commercial performance of all individual brands and, naturally, also that of the major industrial groups operating in Italy, whose figures are presented in a second table together with those of the brands considered representative of each group.
