Trelleborg Tires: ten years of success

For more than ten years, Trelleborg Tires’ ProgressiveTraction technology has been equipping the world’s most advanced and high-performance agricultural machinery.

Developed in Italy with the highest-horsepower tractors in mind, it is now capable of meeting the demands of a wide range of applications, including specialist farming operations

When new, agricultural tires produced by the leading premium brands deliver fairly similar levels of performance when comparing products of the same size and construction. However, after only a few hundred hours of operation, noticeable differences begin to emerge. These differences become increasingly evident as the tires wear, reducing lug height and, consequently, traction performance.

More than a decade ago, with the aim of overcoming this limitation, Trelleborg Tires developed its ProgressiveTraction technology at its research center in Tivoli, near Rome. Initially introduced on tires designed for the highest-powered agricultural machines, the technology is based on the addition of a unique double-edge lug design.

Alongside the traditional lug, a reinforced support structure increases lug stiffness, improving grip in the field while reducing vibrations on the road for greater driving comfort and lower fuel consumption.

As the tire wears, this reinforced section gradually becomes an integral part of the lug, helping to preserve the tire’s original traction capabilities over a longer service life.

The design also retains the distinctive Trelleborg Tires mud breakers positioned between the lugs, enhancing the tire’s self-cleaning capabilities. What might initially appear to be a simple engineering solution has proven to be remarkably effective. More than ten years of success are reflected both in the growing number of farmers worldwide who choose Trelleborg Tires with ProgressiveTraction technology and in the gradual expansion of the technology across tire families designed for medium-power tractors.

Originally introduced with the TM1000 ProgressiveTraction range for high-horsepower tractors, the technology has since been extended to the TM900, TM800 and TM600 ProgressiveTraction tire families. It has also been successfully applied to the TM3000 range for large harvesting machines, designed to carry heavy loads at low inflation pressures while resisting damage caused by crop stubble.

The latest addition is the TM200 ProgressiveTraction, developed specifically for specialist tractors. Featuring VF (Very High Flexion) technology, which enables operation at lower inflation pressures to reduce soil compaction, these tires help preserve soil structure while offering up to 40% greater load capacity and up to 8% better soil protection compared with standard tires. These advantages are further enhanced by a reinforced carcass that improves lateral stability, allowing operators to work safely even on steep slopes and uneven terrain.
